EWOT – Exercise With Oxygen Training
EWOT is a method of enhancing the uptake of oxygen into all of the body’s cells. Without oxygen cells cannot make energy to power your body, to make new cells, or to perform their normal functions. This lack of oxygen, and subsequent lack of energy, can cause many problems within your cells. It doesn’t take much imagination to begin to think of how many dis-eases might have their breeding ground in a lack of cellular oxygen!
Oxygen is literally the life that goes into your blood – the “lifeblood” of your body! All of your cells make energy by a process of breaking down glucose into the molecules that facilitate cellular activity. To do this breakdown, oxygen MUST be present! This activity can be muscle contraction, DNA replication, forming of new cells, and many, many more normal functions. Oxygen is vital to all aspects of our bodily functions! Normally we breath only a few times a minute and each breath is only about 500ml in volume. Air has 21% oxygen and only about 5% of that goes from the air that is in our lungs into the blood.
The factors that allow oxygen to pass from our lungs, into the body and to attach onto hemoglobin, and then to cleave from the hemoglobin and enter our cells, are all adaptive. The more we breath and the more we do, the better the oxygenation of our cells becomes. Conversely the less we do and the less we breath, the poorer this oxygenation. It has been speculated that this reduction in oxygenation of the cells is one of the major causes of the aging process!
Ironically, it is this very slow down that people naturally seem to allow as they get older (and busier) that causes them to feel less like breathing hard and working hard! EWOT can reverse this tendancy to slow down (and “age”) in older people, and it can also enhance the oxygenation processes in extremely fit elite athletes. So, how does EWOT achieve all of this?
The Protocols used by EWOT Australia are unique in many ways, and different to just about all other EWOT systems out there. The first thing you notice is a large bag that holds a very large volume of pure oxygen that has been generated by the oxygen concentrator. The user wears a mask that controls the amount of oxygen that comes in. These two factors alone, make the concentration of oxygen much higher than using a nasal cannula, an oxygen bar type headsets, or breathing directly from the oxygen concentrator. The exercise part of EWOT is highly dependent on the the user. An elite athlete will use a system known as EWOT Energy Plus, that adds a low oxygen contrast component to the super saturated pure oxygen protocol. Their exercise level is intense. Interestingly enough, when they do a 15 minute workout that is to their absolute maximum, they feel completely recovered afterwards – even during peak training loads! EWOT is THAT beneficial for recovery!
A person who is older, or who has a diminished exercise capacity for whatever reason, would perform the EWOT Energy protocol. Depending on the person, this could be the most gentle exercise that they can bare! When breathing high levels of oxygen, the blood is able to pick up a greater percentage than it normally would. With practice, the blood will adapt and pick up even more oxygen, up to natural limits. Any level of exercise begins to open up tiny blood capillaries throughout the body that allow increased blood flow around the cells.
This increased blood flow is now carrying higher levels of oxygen than would normally be possible. Again, with practice, the capillaries (number and fineness) and blood flow improve, up to natural limits. Even the transfer of oxygen from the blood into the cells will improve with practice.
